A little bit of Buri Sport History:

Our story

In the very late 1800s, father and mother Brunner packed their 12 children in a covered wagon traveling from Habkern to Grindelwald.

Eleven girls and one boy set out with their parents to begin their new lives as the owners of the Hotel Gletschergarten – still here today and owned by the extended family!

Our great great Grandmother Berta was one of the twelve. Berta met a young mountain climber named Fritz Steuri which she married shortly after. The young couple began the Steuri Bazaar known today as the Buri Sport. Fritz Steuri was also a famous mountain guide and ski teacher.

Fritz and Berta had three children Erni, Bertie and Fritz junior. Unfortunately, young Fritz passed at a very young age.

Erni was an Olympic skier and started the childrens ski school in Grindelwald. Bertie married young and had 3 children. Heidi, Trudie and Walti. Bertie like half of her siblings expanded out of Grindelwald and had a souvenir shop in Wengen. Bertie passed at a young age and after the passing of Heidi, Trudie and Walti spent most of their time in Grindelwald.

Heidi, our mother, worked every summer and all her holidays helping her adored Berta in the shop. So, when the opportunity arrived Heidi was able to inherit the Bazaar.

Heidi met Max Buri, a young teacher in 1962. They married shortly after and together in 1965 they began the Buri Sport.

Together with the help of their son Nils and his wife Kim continued the brand.

Nowadays the Buri Sport label is joined with the Clubhaus and Clubhaus food truck owned and operated by their son Max and daughter-in-law Christina.

Joel Buri lives in Bern and is a digital marketing manager. His influence is everywhere digital.

Max Buri and his partner Christina have also expanded the franchise with their delightful energy-packed Mila. Our future looks bright!

Our plans are to remain truly local since forever!

Stay tuned the next generation is full of passion and ideas! Check in with us regularly…

Hiking and Biking Trails in Grindelwald – A taste of Hike & Bike with Buri Sport on some of the most beautiful trails!

Taking up the gondola to the top of First is about a 25min ride. It brings you not only up to the Eldorado of a big variety of adrenaline-filled soft adventures but has some of the most beautiful hiking trails around Grindelwald. The suspended path of the iconic Cliff Walk is 2’168 meters above sea level. The 400m long path guides you from the cliff face around to the summit of First. Here you will experience the most magnificent views and catch your memory of a lifetime!

Trail: First – Bachalpsee – Waldspitz – Bort

The panoramic hike from First to the Bachalpsee over the Waldspitz and then back to the Bort gondola station has one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Bernese Alps. The marshlands around the lake have a unique alpine flora and do not only fascinate friends of Botany. There are heaps of those famous Swiss cows and if you are lucky, you can see the groundhogs and hear their sing warning signals.

The hike takes about 2.5h (8km), is medium difficulty, and it is a super trail with kids and invites for a picnic at one of the magical spots. You can pack your own picnic or we at Buri Sport are more than happy to provide you with a fresh yummy picnic. For those who prefer to taste some of the Swiss culinary, there are also nice restaurants on the way i.e., the Waldspitz hut or the Restaurant Bort.

Trail: Pfingstegg to Oberer Gletscher

The 9 km route is decent and can comfortably be hiked in about 3 hours. The starting point for the trail is at the parking lot in front of the Hotel Wetterhorn. It leads you straight towards the glacier foothills of the Upper Grindelwald Glacier (Oberer Gletscher). Several paths lead from Pfingstegg back to the valley. One of the impressive trails takes you past the Marmorbruch and ends in the glacier canyon. The trail direction south leads you passed Wysseflüo. From there it guides you in a steady descent downhill walk straight to the Marmorbruch Mountain Restaurant. The Restaurant was the former mining site of Grindelwald marble and was on the glacier canyon. A visit to this impressive natural wonder is well worth it! You may bring your own picnic, or we are super happy to pack you a nice picnic and make sure you enjoy it in a perfect setting!
